If you are staying near Sants Estació train station or in transit with some time to spare, there’s a park right next to the train station that your kids will surely love, Parc de l’Espanya Industrial. A perfect place to chill out, have some lunch and enjoy a giant slide.
At the park, you will find fountains, some green areas and a small artificial lake. But the must-see feature for your kids is an enormous iron sculpture of a dragon with open wings. Standing at the park front door, next to Sants Estació, the dragon is a giant slide for kids to enjoy. The dragon is 32 meters wide and 12 meters high.
A park with an industrial profile
The place where you can enjoy some rest, a picnic and a fun time with your family was once home to a textile factory that employed thousands of people. The factory was known as La España industrial, hence the name of the park. After the factory was moved elsewhere, and thanks to the neighbourhood social movement, the city hall decided to bring new life to the grounds as a public space.
From top to bottom, you will see in Parc de l’Espanya Industrial nine lighthouses. They look upon the park, and down below a set of white steps lead the way to the lake. Concrete and architecture keep the feel for the industrial past of this park. Also, you will be able to enjoy some interesting sculptures such as Neptune, Venus or Oxen of plenty that date back to the 1929 International Exhibition
Next to the shady green areas on the lower part of the park, getting close to Carrer Muntadas, are some buildings that remain of the old factory. You will find Casa del Mig, now a children’s cultural centre, and the arcade at the entrance gate on Mundatas street. There’s basketball playing areas, a small playground for kids
